Large Adena mound that is located within the henge complex located north of the city of Athens, Ohio. Only a few block from this burial mound was another where the town's High School was built. Adena Henge complex that included a henge that was 210 feet in diameter that is the same size as henges at Mounds State Park in Anderson Indiana, Cambridge City Indiana and Chillicothe, Ohio. This henge complex dates to around 200 A.D., coinciding when the star Polaris becomes visible in the night sky as the “North Star.” 

The mounds to the left of the road have a similarity in spacing to the constellation, Ursa Minor. Four of the henges gateways are aligned to the north furthering the notion that the henges were being used to track the movements of the night sky. This burial mound is also located north of Athens, at the Plains.  It was originally much larger, but reduced from excavations by the Ohio Historical Society.

Many of the burial mounds in Athens county, Ohio are about 35 to 50 feet in diameter. This burial mound is located near Amesville.

This Adena burial mound situated on an  upland, near Millfield, appeared to have never been excavated.

This loaf shaped Adena burial mound was much originally much larger, but has been reduced from years of farming.

Originally this must have been a sizeable Adena burial mound, but has been reduced by farming.

Megalithic dolman from a burial mound in Jordan where the Amorite giants once dwelt.  These same type of dolmans have been found throughout the Ohio Valley containing the skeletal remains of giants.

  "The mound had two circular arches of stone in it. One was about two and a half foot beneath the surface of the mound, and another about six feet. Immediately under the first arch of stone was found two very large skeletons, in a remarkable state of preservation: and under the second arched wall, other part of skeletons were found amidst ashes, coals and mussel  shells. It seemed apparent that those who had been interred under the deeper arch had  remained there many years, before those under the upper arch were buried. Some of these skeletons were buried with their heads towards the center of the mound, and some with their feet toward the center."

Is this Place Haunted? House on an Ancient Burial Mound in Athens County, Ohio

In an old photo taken in the 1940s the original house was dwarfed by the large mound on which it sat. It appears that the old farmhouse was extended in the front and back. I spent a day in Athens County, Ohio and photographed 9 mound sites.  There are more tucked away in the wooded areas that I didn't have time to investigate.

The Grave of a Human Giant
    Visitors go up on Pisgah almost every pleasant day.  Mrs. Atwater, who is still making some improvements, is still there and Mr. Vontrell of Mansfield is there and drives the team down occasionally for visitors.  The Athens Historical society sent word to the mountain that they would visit it next Saturday.  They claimed to know of an Indian grave on top that they would open.  The only Indian grave we ever know of there says the Troy Gazette, was on the south point of the mountain on the farm of Chas. W. Hooker.  A very large thigh bone of a human being was dug up 45 years ago at the point near the spring.
   It was of immense size, and on its being shown to Dr. Theodore Wilder, he said it must have belonged to a man 7 feet high. "There were giants in those days."

 

Burial Mound at the Abandoned Mound Hill Church in Athens County, Ohio and the Oppressive Spirits that Reside.

   In the Nephilim Chronicles: a Travel to the Ancient Ruins in the Ohio Valley more mounds were photographed in Athens County, Ohio than any other County in Ohio. It also had the most reports of giant skeletons than anywhere else in Ohio. None of these mound sites are registered historical sites nor even recognized by the Ohio Historical Society save two at the Plains.  

    It was a haunting experience the day I travelled from one site to the other to find the many mounds that still were visible in the county. There is an oppression like a fog that blankets the county. It definitely a paranormal hotspot. A hundred years ago it was the haven of many spiritualists. Is it any wonder that Athens County is the poorest in Ohio?  There were three times more burial mounds that were listed and mapped but too far into people's land and not visible from the road. 

    I encourage you to use the Travel Guide to visit these sites and get a sense of the heaviness of heart that overwhelms you during your travels through the county. It's just a creepy place.

Unearthed at Athens - Though to Have Been Indians of Gigantic Proportions 

     Athens, Ohio, Dec. 6 - The skeletons of two Indians have been unearthed along the banks of the Hocking River at Roach's mill, one half mile east of Athens.
     The excavation was made under a large building a short distance from the bank of the river.  Unearthed a few fet from the skeletons were many arrowheads which no doubt were buried with the redskins when they were sent by accident or natural death to the happy hunting ground.
     The skeletons were evidently those of gigantic men.  Judging by the bones, they could have not have measured less than seven feet in stature.  The bones were in an excellent state of preservation, the teeth still firmly embedded in the maxillary bones.
