Photograph of the Indian Trail Lasalle Walked in Route to Discovering the Mississippi River

If you were standing here in 1670, you would have seen LaSalle coming up this hill in route to discovering the Mississippi River. Burial mounds near this sitewww.nephilimgiants.net : Porter County, Indiana Indian Burial Mounds   


The portage trail at the "Landing" is still visible within the city limits of South Bend, Indiana. The trail is no longer used, but thousands of years of people walking this path have made the earth a hard pan where nothing grows. The map shows the location of the portage landing with the routes taken by LaSalle in 1679 en route to discover the Mississippi River and later by Charlevoix in 1721. The trail led to the Kankakee River.
