 Wheeling West Virginia Signified to Native Americans as "Place of a Skull."




Wheeling, in the Delaware language, signified the "Place of a Skull" and was given by them to the location upon which the city of Wheeling now stands. The Native Americans lined the banks of the Ohio River at Wheeling with colonists skulls to deter them from settling that area.  Near this site in the West Virgina panhandle was found a mass grave on the Ohio River

Chilicothe, meaning "The Town" was so called by the western tribes because of the ancient ruins in its vicinity.
