According to the Delaware Indians, "There was a tribe of persons long before their time.  Curious large piles of dirt abounded through the region, obviously man made, to which the Delaware Indians shrugged and pointed.
The Delaware knew about a prior Indian tribe of the Allegheny valley called the Allegawes - also they knew knew these Allegawas  to heap dirt up into enormous piles higher than the trees. Somebody before their time had done the job. "Mound builders" they have been called, for lack of a better name.
