Granville, Ohio Alligator Mound is a Salamander

Granville, Ohio Alligator Mound is a Salamander

The Alligator mound is actually a salamander. The axis of the "Alligator" aligns to the May 1st sunrise. This is a time when the salamanders emerged and were the first sign of spring.

An effigy mound in the shape of  a salamander is located in Licking County, Ohio. These were built by the Dakota Sioux Hopewell that also built similar effigy mounds : Sioux Indian Effigies in South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Ohio

The effigy mound is aligned to the May 1 sunrise and was symbolic of the Earth Mother.
