Three Ancient Adena Burial Mounds in Marion, Indiana

In Section 33, Monroe Township, and in VanBuren Township, near Black Creek, are a number of small mounds similar to those described. One or two small ones are situated on the bluffs, east of the river, near Marion. The largest in the county, however, were situated near where the courthouse now stands, and in the city cemetery.

Three mounds are located in the IOOF cemetery near the banks of the Mississenewa River. The second mound is visible in the background.

Ancient Oto Sioux Burial Mounds Nearly Destroyed by a Modern Burial in Marion, Indiana

   A few years ago, I heard that a burial plot and stone had been purchased and was to be placed on an existing ancient burial mound within the IOOF cemetery in Marion, Indiana.  I called the cemetery and bluffed as to who I was and what I would do if they actually destroyed the burial mound with the result of the stone being moved.

     The burial was stopped and the strone removed, all is well with the ancient burial.
