   Fairies have their origins in the Tuath De Danann of Ireland. When the giant Fomorians defeated them, they became fairies who dwelt in burial mounds and ditches of earthworks. They also have an affinity toward springs. 

   This spring in Noble County, Indiana, is the headwaters of the Elkhart River. Springs like this would have been venerated for their healing qualities. It is not believed that any burials are in these two mounds flanking each side of this spring. 

    Were these mounds constructed to be the dwellings of fairies or elementals? There are venerated springs associated with the Adena Hopewell mound builders in the Ohio Valley. This mound was also built by the Adena Hopewell, dating from 800 B.C. - 500 A.D.

   The mounds are on private property. Noble County has burial mounds that are visible from the road or on public land but has made no effort to preserve any of them. On the contrary, they have had two burial mounds partially destroyed by university archaeologists.

History of Noble and Whitley Counties, Indiana 1882
    Mr. Denney opened two mounds on the farm of Samuel Myers, Orange Township, both containing nothing but Charcoal; he also opened three more near there, on the farm of Otis Grannis, one of them being eight feet in height and about eighty feet in diameter at the base. Three quite well-preserved skeletons were taken from the mound, one of the skulls being almost in entirety, and having a much better frontal development than the average. On this mound was an oak tree four feet in diameter and probably more than three hundred years old. This mound is probably the largest in the county. Two other mounds near it, of average size, contained a bed of charcoal each.

 as being beds of charcoal is consistent with these being the site of a charnel house. These were round structures that contained the dead. At some point in time the charnel house would be burned, and the bones cremated and a new charnel house being built on top.

This is the site in Indiana, Ohio, West Virgina and Kentucky where three Adena Mounds are still visible. Yet, this mound is not registered as an historic site nor preserved.

 Ancient Iroquois Burial Mound and Manitou or Spirit Stones Located in Noble County, Indiana

    Certain rocks were believed to be endowed with spirits of the ancient Iroquois Indians. Some of these were rocks that had the appearance of a face.  The other type and most common were stones with a grooved band on the top. 

This rock with a face was situated next to a burial mound in Noble County, Indiana.  This spirit stone would have been used to protect the dead from evil spirits.

The spirit stone was located next to this burial mound that is situated next to a natural spring.

This spirit stone was located at the same site on a hill that once featured a circular earthen fortification. This type of spirit stone has also been referred to as the "Pipe of the Manitou."

MOUND BUILDERS' BONES
Skeleton of a Giant Unearthed in Indiana by Workmen
     Relics of a prehistoric age are being brought to light in Noble County.  The find is in York township, where workmen excavating for a public highway found the skeleton of an inhabitant of early days.
   The bones indicate that the person was fully 9 feet tall.  The bones are unusually large and the position of the skeleton when found indicated that the body had been interred in a sitting position. The belief is advanced that the remains are those of a mound builder.
  Other discoveries in the same neighborhood indicate that York township was inhabited years before the Red Man set foot on Hoosier soil.  Noble County is believed to have been the burial place of a large number of mound builders.

On the west side of a small Iroquois burial mound in Noble County, Indiana was a flat stone pushed deep into the ground.  I was able to free the stone, that revealed what appeared to be a face. These faces were used as Spirit Stones by the ancient Iroquois. The Spirit Stone was used to guard the dead buried in the mound.

The burial mound adjacent to the Spirit Stone has a natural spring next on the west left side.

This carved slate stone was also found on the property, north of the burial mound, on an elevation where a circular earthwork was once situated.

A hiking trail passes right in front of this burial mound at Chain of Lakes Park.   It is so overgrown in the summer; most would walk right by it. See it in the winter. This is another burial mound dug into by the notorious IPFW archaeological school from Fort Wayne. The large hole on the top is their work. The artifacts and skeletal remains were stolen and at last word were with the lead archaeologists who is still "studying" them. Simple grave robbing. There are 85 mound and earthworks in Indiana with only three preserved by the Indiana Historical Society.       Subsequently, Mr. G.C. Glatte, of Kendallville, took us eight miles north, to the farm of E. Shaddock, on the west side of Cree Lake, where a group of seven mounds is located. on a tract of land of about twenty acres. The largest and central mound of the group is sixty feet in an east-west direction, and twenty-five feet north-south. Six others of smaller dimensions are located about the central mound, at unequal distances from it and each other, arranged without the least reference to any apparent plan or system.

Huge skeletons--In Seneca township (Noble County, Ohio) was opened, in 1872, one of the numerous Indian mounds that abound in the neighborhood. This particular one was locally known as the “Bates” mound. Upon being dug into it was found to contain a few broken pieces of earthenware, a lot of flint-heads and one or two stone implements, and the remains of three skeletons, whose size would indicate they measured in life at least eight feet in height. The remarkable feature of these remains was they had double teeth in front as well as in the back of the mouth and in both upper and lower jaws. Upon exposure to the atmosphere the skeletons soon crumbled back to mother earth.
