Adena Burial Mound in Fort Wayne, Indiana on the St. Joseph River is Destroyed by University Archaeologists

A burial mound that has been partially submerged from the St. Joseph River dam can be seen from the shore on Purdue University's campus. Still further down the river, on the east side, at the mouth of Breckenridge Creek, is a single Indian mound, which has not been opened except a slight excavation in its side, which developed the customary lumps of charcoal. This point is about four miles north of Ft. Wayne and is the most southerly point in the county at which mounds and earthworks are known to exist.

This dome-shaped mound appears to have been plowed for many years but is still about four feet high. It is located about five miles southeast of the Upland mounds on a creek that feeds into the Mississenewa River. It is situated on a narrow table of land on the sharp bend of a creek just beyond the tree line to the right. Another small creek, now tiled, cut across this point of land, just beyond the mound. Past the mound, the old tributary embankment can be seen to the right. This place was chosen as a burial place because it would have been surrounded by running water. The burial mound that contained a giant skeleton in Grant County was still visible a few years ago but it was being reduced for topsoil on my last visit. Why aren't these ancient burial mounds protected as historic sites? There are 85 burial mounds and earthworks in Indiana, but only three are recognized as historical sites. What the hell is the Indiana Historical Society doing? What the hell is the Grant County Historical Society doing? Adena Burial Mound (800 BC- 200 AD) in Franklin County, Indiana

This Adena burial mound was photographed in Laurel, Indiana. This burial mound (or any 85 others in Indiana) is not recognized as an historic site or preserved. It dates from 800 B.C. - 200 A.D.  

History of Franklin County, Indiana

    There are quite a number of earthen mounds in the county, but none are of large size. I have seen none more than four feet in height and many of them are not more than three or four feet in height. Those on the highlands bordering the river are on the highest places, and always in view of the river and its valley. These mounds are so situated with reference to each other, that a person standing on a mound in the most northern part of the county, overlooking the valley of the river, could see the next mound below him, and the second and third was in view, and so on with all the others.

History of Noble and Whitley Counties, Indiana 1882
    Mr. Denney opened two mounds on the farm of Samuel Myers, Orange Township, both containing nothing but Charcoal; he also opened three more near there, on the farm of Otis Grannis, one of them being eight feet in height and about eighty feet in diameter at the base. Three quite well-preserved skeletons were taken from the mound, one of the skulls being almost in entirety, and having a much better frontal development than the average. On this mound was an oak tree four feet in diameter and probably more than three hundred years old. This mound is probably the largest in the county. Two other mounds near it, of average size, contained a bed of charcoal each.

 as being beds of charcoal is consistent with these being the site of a charnel house. These were round structures that contained the dead. At some point in time the charnel house would be burned, and the bones cremated and a new charnel house being built on top.

This is the site in Indiana, Ohio, West Virgina and Kentucky where three Adena Mounds are still visible. Yet, this mound is not registered as an historic site nor preserved.

On the grounds of the Fairmount Presbyterian Church, it is one of the few maintained mounds in Ohio because the Ohio Historical Society is not responsible for it.  One of Ohio's Largest Adena Mounds in Butler County, Ohio

This large burial mound in Butler County has the appearance of having two peaks which is due to the Ohio Historical Society trenching through the middle of it. Like so many of thew largest Adena burial mounds this one is also "Address Restricted."  Adena Mound Encircled by an Earthwork is Photographed in Huntington County, Indiana

   This mound is located out of the sphere designated by archaeologists, but the conical shape of the mound that is encircled by an earthwork is clearly Adena.  Another similar mound was located about 50 miles to the north in Lagrange County. This is over one hundred miles to the north of where the archaeologists say the Adena lived. Wrong again. The circular ditch that surrounds the mound is still visible across from the cemetery drive. Another mound with an encircling earthwork was located north, in Lagrange County, Indiana, unfortunately it was so overgrown that a good photo was impossible. Several other mounds similar to this one is described in Ohio county histories within the Great Lakes drainage. A mound surrounded by a ditch is clearly Adena and is more evidence that Northeast Indiana was their early home.

Several years ago, square shaped excavations were seen on the side of the mound revealing that archeologist were attempting to retrieve grave goods from its interior. As is the case of 80 percent of all archaeological digs, no paper was ever published.

  No traces of the works of the pre-historic mound builders are found in the county, except along the Salamonie River, in the southeast corner, opposite Warren, where, on a high eminence in the bend of the latter river, there are two mounds.  The first one visited is at Daniel Adsits.  It is about twenty-five feet in circumference and six feet high.  A slight excavation has been made into the top, but so far as could be learned no relics were found.  There is a shallow trench completely surrounding it.  From the top the view overlooks the Salamonie and its fine fertile bottoms.  The other mound is about a quarter of a mile to the northwest, and in a cultivated orchard belonging to John D. Jones, and near his barn.  The mound has been nearly destroyed by the plow, and I was unable to learn that it possessed any peculiar features or contained any relics.

This believed to be Adena subconical mound is about 4 ft. high and about 30 ft. across. It occupies the highest point on the grounds. The Conrad Mound Archeological Site is an archaeological site in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Ohio. Located east of Cleves in Hamilton County, the site is centered on an isolated Native American mound. Its location atop a ridgeline has been interpreted as evidence that the mound was constructed by the Adena culture.
