Was the Newark Octagon Mound the Place for Ritual Sacrifice?

Was the Newark Octagon Mound the Place for Ritual Sacrifice?

There are many similarities with the religion of the historic Natchez and the ancient mound builders in the Ohio ValleyThe Natchez performed ritual human sacrifice upon the death of a Sun. When a male Sun died, his wives were expected to accompany him by performing ritual sacrifice. Pictured above are 8 people who are being sacrificed at the death of the Natchez Sun King. The number reoccurs within the earthworks in the Ohio Valley.  Were these places of sacrifice of the Sun King?

Were subjects sacrificed at the 8 gateways of the Newark Ceremonial Center at the death of the Sun King?

Prehistoric America, Stephen Peet, 1903
First, let us consider the traditions of the Indian tribes as to their migrations.
1. The Cherokee were a tribe situated, at the opening of history, among the mountains of East Tennessee and perhaps as far east as North Carolina. There is a common tradition that the Cherokee were at one time in the Ohio Valley.
2.) The Dakotas: this tribe or stock was, at the opening of history located west of the Mississippi River, in the State that bears their name.  The Dakotas have a tradition they were once on the Ohio River, and that they migrated from there to the west.
3.) The Natchez were a tribe formerly situated near the city of Natchez.  They were sunworshippers.  It is supposed by some that the Natchez built the sun temples in Ohio, but they changed their methods and adopted the pyramid as their typical work afterwards.
4.0 The Tetons, a branch of the Dakotas, were probably once in the region, though their home was afterward in the northern part of Georgia.

Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee Shell Mounds Determined to be Early Sioux

Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee Shell Mounds Determined to be Early Sioux

The Crib Shell Mound is upriver from Bone Bank in Posey County that was determined to be of Siouan origin. Hopewell mounds and earthworks, like the Mann site in Posey County, are definitive evidence of Sioux origins of the Hopewell mound builders.

In Louis FBurns book “The History of the Osage” he writes, “Recent archaeological findings seem to indicate that both the Dhegiha Sioux and Chewere Sioux were the Indian-Knoll and Shell Mound culture of [Indiana] Kentucky and Tennessee.” Skeletal remains found in these shell mounds are identical to the later Hopewell showing that they had inhabited the Ohio and Wabash Valleys for hundreds of years.

Ancient Hopewell Earthwork on the Wabash River Determined to be Oneota Sioux

Ancient Hopewell Earthwork on the Wabash River Determined to be Oneota Sioux

Prehistoric Antiquities of Indiana, Lilly, 1937
The village and burial site near the mouth of the Wabash yielded so many artifacts similar to the Oneota culture, such as limestone disk pipes, copper ear spools, tubular beads, and characteristic triangular arrow points, that Siouan relationship seems almost certain. Probably the village at Bone Bank [Posey County, Indiana] and the citadel at Merom, both on the lower Wabash, were also Siouan sites.

This is more evidence that the Serpent mounds were constructed by the Dakota Sioux Indians that migrated west after the incursion of the Algonquins.  Another intaglio serpent mound that also was depicted as swallowing an egg has been found in Mitchell County at Waconda Lake. www.nephilimgiants.net : Florida's Hopewell Mound Builders Serpent Mound

Battlefield Indiana's Effigy Mounds of the Stars and Constellations

Battlefield Indiana's Effigy Mounds of the Stars and Constellations

The Upper left represents the burial mound pattern at Battlefield, Indiana.  The lower right is the "Hunter' with his bow.  The mounds at Battlefield duplicate this to precise to believe they were intended to represent anything else.More on Indiana's ancient giants here https://youtu.be/lgY4LXL4xjY

The largest mound this group may represent the star, Rigel. All of the mounds that would have represented the 'bow' are now gone.  The four mounds linear mounds are located behind the houses at the far left.

The four linear mounds are still visible, but what do they represent?  The first mound is aligned with the thrid star down from the 'bow' that would align perfectly with the bright star Belatrix.

Two of best-preserved mounds of the four linear mounds of the effigy group.

Betelgeuse, A massive M-type red supergiant star nearing the end of its life.It serves as the "right shoulder" of the hunter it represents (assuming that he is facing the observer), and is the eighth brightest star in the night sky.

Rigel, is blue supergiant that is the sixth brightest star in the night sky. Similar to Betelgeuse. It serves as the left foot of Orion, the hunter.

  • Bellatrix  Bellatrix serves as Orion's left shoulder

8 Foot Giant Sioux Indian's Burial Discovered in Iowa

8 Foot Giant Sioux Indian's Burial Discovered in Iowa

History of Fremont County, Iowa 1881

In 1875 a huge Sioux skeleton was unearthed at a brickyard about one mile east of Hamburg at a depth of fourteen feet from the surface of the earth. The bones were for the most part in an advanced state of decay but the teeth were well preserved. The remains are believed to be those of a giant at least eight feet in height. The teeth were worn down almost to the jaw-bone, which fact indicated that the "mighty men of renown" must have lived in the days mentioned by the old Sioux Indians who formerly lived in the vicinity of Hamburg.

7 1/2 Foot Sioux Indian Skeleton Uncovered Near Champaign, Illinois

Large skeletons have been unearthed across the State of Illinois. It was the later Sioux who constructed Cahokia, so it is presumed that the large skeletons belong to this class

Urbana Democrat, Urbana Illinois

Bones of Giants Found Under Soil West of Urbana
September 11, 1914
The workmen at the sewerage disposal plant west of Urbana unearthed two skeletons Thursday afternoon of unusually large proportions. The steam shovel employed in the excavation work tore into the bones and broke a number of the pieces but enough has been found to piece out enough of the bodies to show that the original possessors of the framework were of unusual build. The bones were discovered about two feet from the surface of the ground between the soil and the gravel, immediately under the soil. Charles McDargh, authority on and collector of such things, went to the place Friday and secured the bones and will piece them together to make as near the complete skeleton as is possible. Mr. McDargh was interviewed by the Democrat as to the possible origin of the bones Friday morning. He stated that he had never seen so massive a specimen as the one secured with but one exception. While in the Chattanooga museum he had seen the parts of the skeleton of a person taken from the Tennessee river which measured pretty well up to the one secured Thursday. The Southern specimen was said to have measured approximately 7 1/2 feet high. These are of a race supposed to be mound builders, as they bury their dead very near the surface.
Mr. McDargh has not decided as yet whether the specimens recently acquired is of that period or of some enormous Indian. The teeth are all in place in the jawbone, which measured 5 inches and is 7 inches long. The teeth are in a good state of preservation, though worn down considerably, indicating the age of the possessor. All the bones secured are of unusual size and the man was undoubtedly a large fellow. If the men are of the same race as the one found in Chattanooga they probably lived some three or four thousand years ago, as it has been determined that the southern gentlemen was that old. As soon as the bones were discovered Sheriff Faulkner was called upon to take charge but he felt that it would be an usurpation of authority and suggested that the township trustees were the proper ones to take the case in hand. M. B. Saxbe was not notified but no action was taken. All thought of any recent interment has been abandoned, as the bones show clearly the long time they have lain under the surface. When first discovered the workmen at the plant flocked to the place and all sorts of theories and conjectures were advanced but it was finally decided that the bones were of ancient and not recent origin.
